Just What is So Compelling About Riding a Motorcycle?

Sometimes people may wonder what it is about riding a motorcycle that makes it so compelling. Some people wonder why anyone would want to take the risk of getting on a fast two-wheeled vehicle and apparently putting their well-being in jeopardy. The fact is, riding a motorcycle may simply be the most thrilling experience you can ever undergo, aside from perhaps piloting a fighter aircraft (which normal people will never get to experience). And it’s not as dangerous as some people might think– as long as it’s approached from a mature, informed mindset! More than anything, it’s most important to take on the task of learning to ride a motorcycle with a cautious approach.

According to national statistics, more than ninety percent of motorcyclists involved in serious accidents are unlicensed and self-taught. That fact alone should give you room for pause. Before you jump on to a motorcycle and scream off into the sunset, make sure you are properly trained and licensed! For more than three decades, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation has been providing high quality training and riding education for budding motorcyclists of all ages. It’s the perfect way to go from zero to knowledgeable motorcyclist in a matter of just a few days. With branches in every state, it’s a no-brainer to attend an MSF rider course if you intend to pick up the sport of motorcycling.

The basic rider course doesn’t take much time at all, and will give you a wealth of motorcycling knowledge in an easy-to-digest manner. Most attending students have absolutely no experience with motorcycles, but the class is also excellent for returning riders who may be getting back into the sport. Also, the diversity in age among students is very apparent, and a startlingly increasing number of women are learning to ride motorcycles these days. When queried, most of these women say they’re tired of riding on the back of a motorcycle as a passenger, and now want to take control. Good for them! It’s now well accepted that women can ride motorcycles as well as men, and perhaps even more safely, since they lack the testosterone-infused, ego-driven personalities of many “macho” males.

The course itself usually consists of a day or two of classroom training, which covers riding basics and motorcycle control layout. This classroom portion may consist of video watching and workbook exercises as well. Next, the fun part begins. A day of two of actual riding on an enclosed lot finishes up the training. For those of you have never ridden a motorcycle before, this part of the training is an absolute blast. You’ll usually be provided all necessary equipment such as a helmet and gloves, and of course the actual motorcycle, and friendly and knowledgeable instructors will teach you firsthand how to start, operate and ride your first motorcycle. Chances are, after this first day of riding–and personally realizing just how fun riding a motorcycle is–you’ll never look back.

The Ever Growing List of Roles for the Modern ATV

The atv, or all terrain vehicle, once considered pure recreation and excitement has emerged as much more than that. Years of innovations in the atv industry have produced superior machines with extraordinary reliability and performance. Aside from enjoying the wooded trails and sand dunes, the atv has found itself in numerous practical roles including search and rescue, law enforcement, agriculture and farming, snow removal, hunting and patrol of gamelands, and just about any job that requires access to areas previously unreachable by four wheel drive trucks. The four wheel drive (4×4) atv models in particular have exploded onto the scene. These utility atvs capable of being driven by all four wheels, are able to perform far more tasks than originally anticipated. The addition of accessories including luggage and storage racks and powered winches have also impacted the use of atvs for business and practical purposes. Engines can range in size with maximum displacement as high as 800cc providing plenty of power for towing, dragging, and other tasks. A reverse gear provides much more versatility than the mono-directional atvs of earlier years. Shaft drives have replaced chain and sprocket drives on the original sport models. PTO has become an option providing power for those who need to drive external accessories and machinery. With a plethora of options available, the 4×4 utility atv can be considered a viable off-road vehicle and useful tool rolled into one.

Law enforcement is a fine example of atv use from a practical standpoint. The police have begun making use of atvs for patrolling as well as search and rescue. The ability of the atv to travel off-road in less than perfect road or trail conditions makes the atv the perfect tool for police in rural areas. In areas where horseback and foot patrol used to be the only option, the atv can provide a reliable means of travel, and in some cases a much longer range. In a city environment, atvs play a huge role in crowd control. The atv has also made beach patrols far easier for enforcement officers. Large areas of sandy beach can be patrolled in a relatively short period of time versus good, old fashioned walking. Firefighters also can reach wooded areas normally off-limits to firetrucks and medical personnel now have a  means of assisting and retrieving individuals in need of emergency medical care.

The use of atvs in agriculture and farm operations is most predominant of all. Small and medium sized farms have made use of atvs performing tasks previously performed by horses and by good old human power. The application of pesticides has become more efficient due to the availability of atv-mounted pesticide applicators. The feeding of livestock has become easier using atvs for hauling and distributing feed. Mowing smaller fields can be more efficient with atvs over full size tractors especially in areas with limited access. The relocation of dirt and gravel, a simple task done for a variety of reasons, has been made easier as atvs can reach areas not accessible by pickup truck or tractor. Seeding is another example of life made easier on the farm by means of atv, an attached atv spreader can ease the workload associated with seeding crops as well. Tilling can also be accomplished via atv. A cumbersome tiller attached to a full size tractor may not always work well in areas with limited access or difficult maneuverability.

Anyone who has ever ridden an atv for recreational purposes knows how gratifying and enjoyable riding can be and it is always interesting to see exciting new roles played by the all terrain vehicle as they continue to emerge year after year. Through the use of new and innovative accessories, larger engines, better suspension and control, we can only imagine where we’ll find an atv next.

Kos- Home of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, Greece

Kos, one of the larger of 18 islands in the southern Aegean Sea, gives you a taste of rural life in Greece. The well populated city played an important role in the Trojan War with its 30 ship loads of warriors. Tourism plays a major part in supporting the economy here and basic amenities are available in plenty. The beautiful beaches here add to the attractions of this tourist destination.

The town itself is a laid back kind of place with friendly locals quite willing to have a quick chat while you shop for essentials or ask for directions. Kos is the home of two of history’s famous personalities- Pharaoh Ptolemy II and Hippocrates. The Pharaoh’s birth made Kos an important center of trade and commerce.

However, it is Hippocrates whose contribution to medicine is such that it is impossible to erase his name from the annals of history. In the centre of the town, one can see the temple where he is believed to have imparted his lessons to aspiring physicians of those days.

A medical library called the Asklepion is located in the hills overshadowing the town. This was an important centre of learning for many years following Hippocrates’s death.

During my holidays here, I also visited the Castle of the Knights of Saint John’s in their itinerary. Built on the site where a Byzantine fortress earlier stood, this castle offers a grand welcome from its location at the entrance of the port.

There are lots of different types of holidays to Greece. On the Sunmaster website there are last minute holidays to Greece leaving within the next few days, and also other options too, such as cheap holidays to Greece for Summer 2010. Greece has lots of resorts based around its small clusters of islands, so it’s entirely possible to find a wide range of holidays to Corfu, Rhodes, Kos and Crete. Flights to Greece take just over 4 hours, so it’s considered a short-haul destination without too much time taken up by travel. The standard of hotels in Greece varies from budget self-catering apartments to all-inclusive resorts and five-star hotels. Finally, one of the best things to mention about holidays to Greece is the gloriously sunny weather over the summer! With the best beaches in Greece being some of the best in the Mediterranean, it’s no surprise that thousands of holidaymakers book package holidays to Greece year after year.
