Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts or OEM parts?
Contrary to what many believe, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) motorcycle parts are not inherently better than aftermarket motorcycle parts. Like any product in a dynamic marketplace, aftermarket motorcycle parts manufacturers often find a way to improve upon the performance or the look of the part. A comparison of the two types of parts is often contrary to what many people assume.
OEM Motorcycle Parts:
An OEM part is part made by the same company that made the part for the original vehicle. Oftentimes, auto and motorcycle manufacturers don’t make the parts themselves, but contract the job to a manufacturing company. A comparison of the two different types of parts shows the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
The manufactures of aftermarket motorcycle parts must apply for the rights to reproduce a part. Aftermarket motorcycle parts manufactures operate under strict guidelines and by nature of their profession must be absolutely precise in their design.
Good aftermarket motorcycle parts often can’t be distinguished from the original. Additionally, manufacturers of aftermarket motorcycle parts have the flexibility to improve upon the design and the quality. Normally, aftermarket motorcycle parts are sold for much less than OEM parts. The possible downside to using aftermarket parts is, that if installed by a non-certified technician, could impact the warranty.
Finding Quality Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Different company’s aftermarket motorcycle parts will differ in look and quality. Your best bet is to find a highly reputable aftermarket motorcycle parts dealer who is in the know about all of the latest parts and manufacturers and who only offers the best quality after market motorcycle parts.
Who Uses Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Those who build custom motorcycles use aftermarket parts to build bikes with fresh new designs and unique looks. Those with older model bikes often choose aftermarket motorcycle parts because parts for older models have often greatly improved since the original part was manufactured.
Insurance companies almost consistently choose identical aftermarket motorcycle parts to replace damaged bikes after an accident. When the price is cheaper and the quality is as good, if not better than the original, it makes sense to use aftermarket motorcycle parts.
Custom Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Aftermarket motorcycle parts are essential for customized bikes. Aftermarket parts like wheels, tires, handlebars, frames, foot pegs, mirrors, etc. offer a great number of options in terms of customization. The wide variety of aftermarket motorcycle parts available today makes it easy to create an original looking bike.
There are lots of after market motorcycle parts to make fixing or customizing your bike inexpensive and simple. Before forking out too much cash on a comparable part, take stock of your aftermarket options.
Upgrading Your Bike Seat From Stock To Aftermarket
When it comes to comfort when riding a aftermarket bike seat is a must. Motorcycle Seats are produced by a variety of manufacturers. The main ones being Sargent, Corbin and Mustang. When choosing a motorcycle seat there are really two factors that come in to play. One is definitely the look of the seat on your bike and the other is the comfort level that can be achieved by the upgrade. Most of your bike seats these days are made of a memory cell foam or some such material that is highly durable. It will actually almost act like a second shock absorber. I upgraded from my stock bench to a Corbin seat and it was a night and day difference.
Corbin Seats use a material called comfort cell foam which is built to be firm so even after hours of riding it wont sink, where your stock bench’s foam would loose firmness within 30 minutes and you would be sitting on the plastic pan that the bike seat is made from. Sargent seats are either covered with leather or a synthetic material that is made to look like leather. No matter what you ride Corbin will have a bike seat that is made to fit your bike. Almost all motor cycle manufacturers have a Corbin upgrade that will bolt right on available to them. This goes for cruisers as well as sport bikes alike.
Sargent motorcycle seats also come in a variety of flavors, however their selection tends to lean more towards sport bike owners then cruisers. Sargent also caters to the exotic bike owners. Seats are available for makers like Aprilla and Ducati. This manufacturer uses a material called super cell foam in their seats which is designed to give incredible comfort even for long distance rides. Not only does this manufacturer make one hell of a comfortable seat the quality and looks are also part of the package making this one of the premier makers of seats in the world. Little things like synthetic material that imitates a carbon fiber look or the Italian flag being sown in to the front of the seat make this not only a comfortable bike seat but also a great looking upgrade that help give your bike a custom look.
Mustang motorcycle seats are mainly available for cruiser’s instead of sport bikes. Mustang manufactures many a motorcycle seat that is made to look like the old school bike seats that you would see on bikes from the 60′s, 70′s & 80′s. They are great if you are trying to achieve and old school look for your chopper. Not only do they make the saddles they also make sissy bar pads and backrest. Mustang currently has motorcycle seats available for Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Victory Cycles. Mustang seats are made with special controlled-density foam therefore assuring riding comfort even on long rides.
When you do decide on a bike seat no matter who the manufacturer is it is always recommended that you find out about the manufacturers warranty. Also with some seats extra hardware is required to mount it on to your bike. I think most important of all is that you get some feedback from others that have similar seats. You can find reviews online at different social sites that are geared towards bikers.

Custom Aftermarket Motorcycle Forward Controls Handlebars and Risers For Metric Cruisers
One of the joys of owning your own motorcycle is the custom bits that you can use to customize the bike. Parts like Forward Controls and risers as well as handlebars can change the look of your cruiser instantly with very little investment. Also most of these mods can be done on your own. Custom forward controls are a great way to give any metric cruiser or American Road Hog a more custom chopper look. A nice set of straight bars can also give your ride a real drag bike look. especially when you combine them with a set of handle bar risers. There are several manufacturers to choose from when it comes to customizing your cruiser.
For a great set of custom motorcycle handlebars Flanders has one of the biggest selections around. This manufacturer carries anything from your classic handlebars to straight bars to ape hangers. Whatever your flavor you’re likely to find custom handlebars by Flanders. Carlini Design is another quality maker of handlebars. Their selection is not as extensive as Flanders, however they make up for it with some very unique handlebars with a nice custom look. There are many more makers of handlebars but these two are the ones I am most familiar with.
Motorcycle Forward Controls are another way to take a OEM Metric Cruiser and give it a more custom chopper look. Forward controls basically take a bike with mid controls and move them to a forward position giving you a more relaxed riding position on the bike. Jardine makes some decent forward controls. forward controls and floorboards are a great way to customize your ride. You will find the riding position with forward controls to be much more comfortable then the mid position, not to mention that the forward controls look way cooler.
Risers are made by many of today’s manufacturers of aftermarket motor cycle parts. Companies like Cobra, Show Chrome and Lightning Performance all make quality handlebar risers. Most of them are made of either a billet aluminum or some sort of steel which is then chrome plated for a quality finish. handlebar Risers are made in a variety of sizes usually a 1.5 to about a 5 inch riser is what is available depending on the manufacturer. Also when buying a handlebar risers be sure that you match them up correctly with the right size handle bar. the dimension of the handlebar is important. If you do not match the bars with the right riser you will have major issues with installation because the hole in the riser is designed for a specific dimension and will usually not accommodate a different dimension. Some risers also come with a rise like for example you might have a 3 inch rise and a 1 inch pullback instead of just rising straight up risers with a pullback also do just that they are designed with a bend that relocates the bar a bit closer to the tank and the rider.
