Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Suzuki – From Looms to Motors

The Suzuki Motor Corporation bears little resemblance to the ancestor that gave birth to it at the turn of the twentieth century. Although it is hardly recognizable as the same company, its founder Michio Suzuki would have no trouble recognizing the company that still bears his family name.

In the beginning, the company was known as the Suzuki Loom Company. It was located in the tiny seaside village of Hamamatsu, Japan. At this time, Japan had a huge silk industry and the Suzuki Loom Company built weaving looms. Mr. Suzuki held over 120 patents in loom building technology and exported the looms overseas as well.

Although the loom company was extremely successful, Mr. Suzuki was interested in diversifying. Because the population of Japan at this time was beginning to take interest in motorized transportation, Mr. Suzuki turned his attention to producing small automobiles. His venture was quite successful. He began producing his small passenger vehicles in 1937. Shortly after launching into the auto manufacturing business, Japan became deeply embroiled in World War II. Just as most manufacturing companies had done, Suzuki plants were converted over to production of military equipment. With the end of the war, Suzuki needed capital so it went back to what it knew the production of looms. When United States began shipping cotton to Japan, the company really began to prosper. Unfortunately, this would prove to be short-lived. The cotton market collapsed in 1941 and Mr. Suzuki’s original plans to diversify were once more put into action.

Once the war ended, the Japanese were once again interested in motorized transportation. While several companies offered a clip on type motor that was designed to be attached to a regular bicycles, Suzuki developed one of the first two stroke motorized cycles known as the “PowerFree” to be developed in Japan. The cycles were inexpensive and easy to maintain and allowed the rider to either pedal with engine assistance pedal without engine assistance or allow the engine to provide total vehicle propulsion. The Japanese government found the concept so innovative that they offered Suzuki a financial incentive to continue research in the new motorized cycle. In 1956 Suzuki Motor Corporation was born. Since that time Suzuki has expanded into manufacturing compact cars, motorcycles, ATV’s, outboard engines and motorized wheelchairs.

Suzuki now maintains a full time presence in the United States And American Suzuki is headquartered in Brea, California. The company is currently partnered with General Motors to market different styles of SUV’s and Compact cars here in the United States. In 2004, Suzuki again in conjunction with General Motors purchased the bankrupt Daewoo Motors.

Though the U.S economy has been steadily contracting, Suzuki has continued to post earnings in every quarter. In addition, by 2006 had sold more than 100,000 vehicles in the United States. The Suzuki Grand Vitara has been responsible for a large portion of Suzuki’s success here in America. The Grand Vitara has attracted many of the young, well-educated buyers looking for vehicles large enough to suit family life but also have a proven record of responsible environmentalism.

Should I Buy New Motorcycle Engines or Used Motorcycle Engines?

It depends a lot on what you intend to use your Motorcycle Engines for. If you are going to be using the Motorcycle Engines solely for installation on motorcycles, then used Motorcycle Engines may do already (though if you really want to splurge, new ones are even better.) But what if you were going to place the Motorcycle Engines in cars (rather than car engines)? How would that work out?

Would you Ever Buy Used Motorcycle Engines?

A very picky motorcycle collector might say: “never anything used for me!” But to others, Used Motorcycle Engines are actually not so bad, provided you know how to pick them and know what you’re doing when you’re assembling your motorcycle with the used parts. Some Used Motorcycle Engines are in quite acceptable (sometimes, even excellent) condition so you would be getting a good deal, under those circumstances.

General Motors’ turnaround program in North America according to Kempston Drakes, is ahead of schedule saying that “A new GM is beginning to take shape; a company that is leaner and faster; one that has a passion to create the finest cars in the world.”

Kuwait is one of the outstanding markets for General Motors since it continues to provide the automaker with a strong sales growth and market share. As a matter of fact, for 2006 alone General Motors was able to record an annual sale of 18,289 in Kuwait which is an approximately 5% increase over its 2005 record. This growth was said to be the result of the introduction of new cars and SUVs throughout 2006.

According to Kempston Darkes, “Kuwait remains a very important market for General Motors. We are committed to doing everything we can to grow our business here. Together with our dealer partners around the region, we stand firmly behind our cars and SUVs, offering our customers outstanding ownership experience. We have made, and will continue to make, significant investments in all aspects of the business to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the ownership cycle.”

General Motors’ Kuwait dealership Yusuf A. Alghanim & Sons’ sales have increased almost three-folds from 4,092 units in 2001 to 11,581 in 2006. The company is currently at its third generation of family ownership and management with at least 1,000 employees working on various GM brands such as Hummer, Opel, Cadillac, and Saab.

“Today, we formally began work on a major new project in Shuwaikh, where Mrs. Kempston Drakes commemorated a ground-breaking ceremony on the site of the new building,” said Samir Kasem, Vice President, Yusuf A. Algahnim & Sons. He further added, “The showroom, a USD 10 million investment, will be completed in 2008 and will extend to 6000 square meters. This will be supported by a USD 69 million advanced service and workshop facility extending over 70,000 square meters. Our aim remains to be at the forefront of General Motors dealers- not just in Kuwait and the Middle East, but in the context of GM’s entire global operations.”

Similarly another GM dealership in Kuwait the Mohammed Saleh & Reza Yousuf Behbehani Company has also experienced an increased in sales by about 150% in the past four years, from 2,722 units in 2002 to 6,757 in 2006. A large percentage of the total units comprised of GMC Envoy SUVs which are more than what any other GM dealer in the world has sold.

“Naturally we are delighted that we both hold such a distinctive status in our global achievements with General Motors. We are on the verge of the most exciting expansion phase in our history. No less than million have been budgeted for a four level new service centre that will extend to around 32,000 square meters, a GM Certified Pre-Owned Cars showroom that will measure 700 square meters and a new 8,000 square meters of parts storage and distribution facility,” explained Adel Behbehani, Director of Sales, Mohammad Saleh & Reza Yousuf Behbehani Company.

It should be noted that in the year 2006, General Motors world’s largest automaker and maker of popular auto parts brand like GM brake dust shields, has launched 17 new models or new generations of existing favorites in the Middle East with brands like the GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and the Chevrolet Lumina and Caprice. GM sales across the region has totaled to 140,509 units which is a 24% increase from its 2005 sales.

An Overview On Boat Motors

Article by Mike Selvon

Most boats today have some type of boat motors. Both tiny motor boats and huge luxury liners are put into motion by motors. Far more boat owners prefer to have their boats propelled rather than sailed.

Gaining a comprehensive knowledge of boat motors is important, as it allows you to decipher what is wrong in case of malfunction. Recognizing a problem early on will allow you to avoid both physical and financial risk.

All three parts of a boat motor must be kept in good shape. If either the engine, propeller, or drive system fail to work properly, the motor will not run.

The drive system on motor boats may be inboard, outboard, or inboard/outboard (also known as a stern drive). The drive system controls the transfer of the engine’s power to the water and directs the thrust. An outboard system places all parts of the motor together in a housing located on the outside of the boat.

The entire unit swivels to change direction. The outboard motor is lightweight, often portable, and takes up little to none of the boat’s interior space. However, the weight of the motor can cause the boat to ride low at the stern and the cutout space where the motor is carried can make the boat prone to taking water in that location.

An inboard drive system moves the engine inside the boat, close to the center of the hull. The inboard location of the engine creates better balance in the boat. However, the inboard engine is generally heavier than the outboard system and critical interior space is reduced.

In a stern drive, or inboard/outboard motor, the engine is located inside the boat as with an inboard system. However, the rest of the motor is located outboard. This minimizes the loss of interior space while maintaining the balance and low center of gravity of the inboard system. The major disadvantage to this system is that the motor is more complicated, and therefore more prone to failure, than either the inboard or outboard motor.

The engine is perhaps the most important decision that must be made about motor boats. The most popular engine is the four-cycle internal combustion gasoline engine. This type of engine is sufficient for any boat up through a mid size family cruiser.

The engine is roughly equivalent to that of a heavy-duty truck engine. Remember that a gasoline engine must always be well ventilated to prevent fire or explosion. Two cycle engines are still available and are quite lightweight, but require adding oil to the mix. They tend to smoke and leak and are no longer considered ideal.

Diesel engines are in many ways superior to gasoline engines and are the engine of choice for large ships and commercial vessels, as well as some versions of the sports boat. They burn more cleanly and won’t explode. However, the initial cost is much higher than that of a gasoline engine.

The final component in most boat motors is the propeller. At one time, choosing the proper propeller was a mysterious art best left to professionals. Now it is possible to choose your own. Propeller selection is still complicated, and it is best to consult with a professional or discuss your choices with experienced boat owners in a boat forum.

Take the time to make yourself familiar with boat motors. Doing so will allow you to successfully combine the components you need for a smooth running boat. If there is something you do not know about boat motors, consult an expert.

Motors: The best job on the force.

Article by Joe Berk

Motor officers. We see them on the highway splitting lanes, or aiming radar guns while partially hidden on a city street, and we sometimes wonder: Is it as exciting and as much fun as it appears to be? Who are these people, what do they do, and how are their motorcycles different than ours?

Motor officers are competitively selected volunteers. Departments often require three years experience, maturity, a good citation rate and exceptional riding skills. For candidates who make the cut, the path forward is rigorous. It usually starts with an ultra-intense, two-week course offered by larger agencies such as the Los Angeles Police Department (graduates describe the training as tough; tougher even than SWAT or Marine Corps boot camp). The attrition rate is high (touch a cone or put a foot down during testing, and you’re out). For the roughly 75 percent who graduate, on-the-job training follows. The process takes about eight weeks. Many motor officers also become trained accident investigators, which can take another six to eight weeks.

Many officers make motors a career. Others go in it for a few years and then return to other assignments as department needs evolve. Motor officer ages range from the 20s all the way up to a few who are in their late 60s. Many are college-educated, and a few have graduate degrees. Quite a few have military experience. Most are family men and women and motorcycling enthusiasts.

All of the motor officers I spoke with love what they do (who wouldn’t?), and this has a lot do to with the fact that they get paid to ride high-performance motorcycles while executing their traffic enforcement mission. Motor officers focus on speeding, intersection violations, cell phones, seat belt and commercial vehicle code enforcement. They seldom issue warnings (“If the boot hits the pavement, the pen hits the paper”), as studies show warnings don’t change bad driving habits. A motor officer might generate from 5-25 citations daily, but they don’t do it to generate revenue. One of the police chiefs I interviewed explained that very little citation money actually goes to the city (most goes to county, state and federal governments, and to the courts). Motor officers issue citations to change driving habits and to promote safer driving.

Motor officers usually don’t handle domestic disturbances, noise complaints and other nuisance calls, but they have other missions. One is the Active Shooter program, designed to address Columbine-like situations. The Active Shooter program gets heavily armed officers on-scene quickly. Police motorcycles carry a shotgun, an automatic rifle or a machine pistol locked in a rack, and with the ability to cut through traffic, motor officers can get anywhere quickly.

Most motor officers work weekdays during normal business hours. They have exclusive use of their motorcycles (they take them home at night), and they go directly on duty once they arrive in their area. Motor officers don’t work a beat (they can go anywhere within the city’s jurisdiction), but they do monitor assigned areas based on citizen complaints about infractions or other collision factors.

Police motorcycles include the BMW R1200RT-P, the Honda ST1300PA and two Harley-Davidsons (one based on the Road King, the other on the Electra Glide). BMW also has the GS650P (based on the GS650), and Harley the Buell Ulysses, but few opt for these models. The choice effectively boils down to BMW’s R1200RT-based model, Honda’s ST1300-based machine or either of the big-twin Harleys. Several departments still use the old Kawasaki KZ1000P, but Kawasaki exited the police market several years ago and the Kawasakis will ultimately be phased out.

All of the current manufacturers (Harley, BMW and Honda) sell only through dealers. A fully equipped police motorcycle is about ,000, with the nod for lowest cost usually going to Harley-Davidson. Depart- ments buy their motorcycles through a competitive bidding process, with pricing determined by quantity and buy-back provisions. It’s a competitive market and margins are thin. On the other hand, most police agencies are preventive maintenance fanatics, so dealers do well in servicing police motorcycles.

Harley has been in the police motorcycle market longer than anybody (they sold police motorcycles in 1908 to Detroit, a city that is still a loyal Harley customer). Harley owns 85 percent of the domestic police market, and they sell police motorcycles in 45 other countries. Police Harleys use the 103-cubic-inch, Twin-Cam motor. While the Harleys are just a bit slower than either the Honda or the BMW, the difference is surprisingly small all the way up to freeway speeds, and the Harley is significantly quicker than the old Kawasaki KZ1000P. Harleys have a high resale value, and Harleys get the nod for officer comfort. Bob Laidlaw (patriarch of Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson, one of Harley’s largest dealers) says, “Nothing has more command presence than a police officer on a Harley-Davidson.” Laidlaw knows what he’s talking about-he’s been around Harleys since the 1940s, and he recently sold nearly 300 Harleys to the Los Angeles Police Department.

BMW, always a major European player, started making inroads into the U.S. police motorcycle market about a dozen years ago. BMW’s U.S. penetration began with its in-line K bikes back in the 1980s, but the motorcycle that put them on the map was the boxer twin. BMW’s first major order was with the California Highway Patrol, and the CHP continues to use BMWs. The 1,200cc boxer twin R1200RT-P is the current police BMW, and the departments that use it are probably BMW’s most effective salespeople (they all love their BMWs). The BMW is faster in nearly every category than the other police motorcycles, and as the departments and BMW point out, it is delivered as a complete police package.

Add department radio heads and decals, and the bike is ready for duty. The police version includes two batteries (one for the bike, and one for emergency equipment), additional oil cooler fans and a police-specific wiring harness. Gene Eberhardt, motor sergeant and traffic commander for the Ontario Police Department in California, says that the R1200RT-P is much faster than the 1150 twin it replaced, and it can climb curbs without scraping the undercarriage (the R1150RT-P, the Harley and the Honda cannot).

Honda is a recent newcomer to the U.S. police market with its ST1300PA, although it dabbled in the U.S. market as early as the 1960s. Honda is big overseas with police versions of the 750 in-line four (the CBX750P) and the VFR, but neither is sold here. Honda’s ST1300PA is based on its civilian ST1300 and is an impressive motorcycle. The big Honda has several police-specific features (a speedometer graduated in 2-mph increments, handlebar risers, special controls, a radio box and a rear subframe with equipment mounting points). Dealers or the agencies install other police equipment (crashbars, strobe lights, radars, etc.). The Honda’s advantages are reliability, a network of 1,200 dealers and performance (the police version is governed to 117 mph, but it gets there quickly).

Motor officers typically only do about 50 miles per day on their police motorcycles, but the duty is severe. Tires last 2,000-3,000 miles due to the nature of the mission. If a motor officer detects a speeder, the motorcycle might accelerate from 0 to 90 mph and then back to a stop in less than 500 yards, and this might be repeated 20 times a day. It’s hard on clutches, tires and brakes. Most departments replace their motorcycles every three years, although the recession is lengthening replacement cycles.

So, the next time you see a motor officer, consider the very special nature of the machines and the people who ride them. Motor officers are highly trained professionals, and both the officers and the motorcycles earned their stripes through rigorous competition. And if you ever wondered if it is as much fun as it appears to be, every motor officer interviewed for this article responded with a resounding yes.

Jawa Motors – Machinery parts manufacturer – Air Source Treatment

Article by jekky

History First modelThe first model was introduced on October 23, 1929. This was a 500 cc 4-cycle engine with 12 kW of power (18 hp) and fuel consumption of 6 liters per 100 km. Although priced highly, through the first years (and several constructional fixes) this motorcycle was successful and was considered reliable. Second modelDue to the economic recession of the early 1930 a cheaper and simpler motorcycle was needed. Year 1932 marked the introduction of Jawa 175, with its 3.6 kW engine. This light (70 kg) machine was capable of speeds up to 80 km/h and fuel consumption of 3.5 liters per 100 km. The first year of production was an immediate success, selling over 3000 of the Jawa 175, almost three times the number of the 500 cc model over three years of production. The production of this model was finally stopped 1946. In 1938 Jawa was the first to offer test rides during exhibition show. This test motorcycle was a custom Jawa 175 equipped with dual handlebars, second pair being in the back for the instructor. Over the years total of 27,535 units of the Jawa 175 were built. Jawa AutomobilesJawa MinorIn 1934 Jawa introduced its first car, the Jawa 700, which was DKW-based. In 1937, the modified Jawa 600 Minor was introduced. Production continued in limited numbers throughout WWII, and some were assembled in the immediate postwar period. World war II period Post War developmentIn 1946 Jawa introduced a 250cc two stroke single with dual exhausts which became a widespread utility motorcycle around the world, especially in countries allied to the communist block. Replicas of this original are produced in Chang Jiang Motorworks in China in the 21st century. A 350cc twin cylinder two stroke motorcycle was exported around the world and sold under numerous other brand names as well, including the Eaton’s brand of Eaton’s Road King, and a large single cylinder motorcycle was sold in the 1960s by Sears of Canada. The CZ brand of motorcycle was merged with Jawa by the socialist economic planners after the Communist victory in 1948. CZ also made street motorcycles but was more well known for their motocross and enduro models. ISDT models for trials and enduro were produced under the Jawa and CZ nameplates. MopedsJawa made a variety of two-stroke mopeds, and was one of the first companies to include electronic ignition on their mopeds. Unfortunately, this “Tranizmo” unit was prone to failure. Jawa mopeds now have a fairly poor reputation, due to the difficulty of getting replacement parts, and the high failure rate of the “Tranizmo” unit. For more information on Jawa mopeds, see babetta. Jawa in IndiaJawa motorcycles were introduced in India in the late 50′s and they have a cult following to this present day. Production was also carried out directly in India by Ideal Jawa based out of Mysore. The Jawa 250cc models, yezdi 250cc models, the Twin 350 and Monarch models are driven to this day in various parts of the country. The Jawa bikes with fuel tank paddings and ignition systems on the fuel tank are now collectors items. Jawa motorcycles also used the brand Yezdi meaning “going or running”. RacingJawa 600ccm 1962Historically Jawa has been very active in racing, and by far the most active East-European manufacturers in mechanical sports. In track racing Jawa sustained a presence in the World Championship until the mid-sixties with respectable performances considering their limited budget. In Motocross the firm built an impressive palmares before its 4-stroke engines became superseded by 2-stroke engines. In speedway racing, dirt track racing and ice racing where 4-stroke engines were still at an advantage, the firm remained a dominant force, scoring a number of victories that’s still unbeaten today (to be verified). Jawa Speedway racing motorcycles are now a separate company. The separate factory where these competition motorcycles were built became a separate company following the privitazations of the 1990s with the fall of Socialism. Recent informationFollowing the dissolution of the union of the Czech and Slovak people into separate states and the dismantling of the socialist economies, the Jawa consumer motorcycles and the Speedway competition bikes were divided into separate companies. Jawa Speedway bikes are still successful, while the Jawa company has struggled. As of 2006 the Jawa mostly produce copies of Honda 250 cc, 125 cc and 50 cc motorcycles and large bike with a 650 cc Rotax engine. (This engine can be also found in BMW F650 series) The iconic 350 cc two-stroke twin, mechanically unchanged since the 1960s but very reliable, is virtually moribund, while the 250 cc twin-port two-stroke single is no longer available. The large bike with 650 cc Rotax engine comes in three different variations. Jawa 650 classic is a retro bike with classic proportions. Jawa 650 Style is aimed for city streets and finally Jawa 650 Dakar is a full-scale enduro bike similar to Honda XL Transalp.
