Automotive Transmission Maintenance and Repair How-Tos in Tampa
Your automotive transmission is a vital part of your vehicle. You therefore have no choice but to have your automotive transmission system repaired when it breaks down. Automotive transmission repair can be very expensive, though, in Tampa and in any other area in the United States. You should, therefore, observe proper automotive transmission maintenance procedures in order to minimize the need for automotive transmission repair or at least postpone it as much as possible. When you do need automotive transmission repair, however, you have to make sure you bring your vehicle only to an auto service mechanic who is the best automotive transmission expert in Tampa. Your car repair mechanic should not just know about diagnostics, auto AC repair or automotive engine and brakes repair. Having the best maintenance and repair support will help you avoid tow truck towing services.
According to reliable auto service mechanics, many automotive transmission diagnostic checks and preventive maintenance procedures can be done by vehicle owners themselves day by day. There is no need to take the vehicle to the auto service shop in Tampa and spend extra for these.
A vehicle owner should regularly inspect the area beneath the vehicle for any puddles or wet spots that indicate the presence of a leak. A vehicle that leaks transmission fluid has a damaged transmission system. The vehicle’s transmission fluid should also be regularly checked with a clean dipstick. The transmission fluid should be allowed to drip from the dipstick to a clean sheet of white paper. The fluid should be a transparent red. If the fluid is dark colored or has dark flakes or metal filings, or if it smells burnt, this means the transmission fluid has oxidized. This should be your signal to immediately bring the vehicle to your Tampa mechanic.
The vehicle owner should always stay observant of how the vehicle performs while it is being driven. The automotive transmission should immediately engage without delay and the car should be ready to move forward when shifted from the park position to the drive position. There should be no jerks felt nor strange sounds heard from the vehicle. The same quick, smooth and quiet response should occur when the car is shifted from drive to neutral, and to reverse. The same should be true when accelerating or decelerating. The vehicle should never lag in responding to gear shifts. Observe the vehicle while still cold and when heated through. Sometimes, problems only show up when the engine has been heated. If the vehicle shudders, jerks or makes odd sounds at any time, take it for a diagnostic check up with your Tampa mechanic.
Make sure your vehicle does not overheat because overheating can damage the automotive transmission system. Overheating burns up and oxidizes the transmission fluid. This creates flakes and deposits that then clog the system. Overheating also warps the automotive transmission system’s metal parts and hardens its rubber seals and gaskets, often resulting in leaks and, ultimately, failure of the system. In Tampa, the intense heat of the sun can make overheating a normal occurrence, especially in stop and go driving in the midst of heavy traffic. If the vehicle is overloaded, this can add to the possibility of overheating.
Once you have observed all the recommended automotive transmission preventive maintenance procedures, you have already done everything you could to prevent the premature need for automotive transmission repair. When the time for unavoidable automotive transmission repair does come, your remaining responsibility is to leave it to the experts and bring your vehicle to your trusted auto service mechanic whose specialization is car automotive transmission repair in Tampa.

Find an Automotive Transmission Repair and Maintenance Expert in Tampa
Not all auto service shops have the necessary expertise for automotive transmission repair because the automotive transmission system is complex, especially for newer models of automatic transmission vehicles. To ensure proper care for your vehicle, find yourself an auto service shop with a car repair mechanic who is an automotive transmission repair and maintenance expert in Tampa.
Usually, new vehicle owners have little more than driving skills. Regarding the automatic transmission system, they just know that “D” means drive, “R” means reverse and “P” means park. They may not even have had to check the transmission fluid themselves, nor do they know about the transmission dipstick. This task is often left to service technicians. One day, though, the car may start to leak transmission fluid. Or it may start making weird noises on the road and start behaving strangely, slipping and not responding to handling.
If your mechanic is not an expert in automotive transmission systems, he may know only about checking and changing the transmission fluid but nothing much beyond that. The proper diagnosis and repair of the problems of an automatic transmission system needs an experienced expert.
The simpler problems of the automatic transmission system, aside from the need to add or change transmission fluid, may be related to the controller, solenoid or valve body. If the problem goes beyond this, the entire automotive transmission system needs to be taken down for closer inspection and repair or rebuilding.
Automotive transmission repair or rebuilding is tedious and takes too much time. There are many different car models, each with variations in their transmission systems. The parts, tools and specifications may differ greatly. The mechanic needs to be familiar with the specific make of your car in order to be able to fix your transmission properly. Very few car repair shops and auto service shops can afford to have the expertise necessary for this.
Rebuilding the transmission system of a car can cost more than ,000.00 in parts and labor costs. Will you risk this much money on non-expert services? Remember that without the experience and expertise necessary, the mechanic may have done the work by trial and error.
Many shops do not even dare to try to repair or rebuild the automotive transmission system. They simply replace the entire transmission with an outsourced remanufactured one. They actually make more money this way since they get a profit from the remanufactured transmission, get paid for labor and spend less time on the job.
Before this happens, take care of your transmission system with preventive maintenance. According to automotive experts, changing the transmission fluid and filter regularly can prevent most transmission problems. Always check the condition of your transmission fluid through its dipstick. If the transmission fluid has a burnt smell or has turned brown or too dark, this means it has oxidized. You may also allow the transmission fluid to drop on to a paper towel. If the droplet does not disperse after half a minute, it is also oxidized. Oxidized fluid needs to be changed completely immediately.
The level of your car’s transmission fluid should also be checked regularly. This is best done while the transmission fluid is heated. The engine should, therefore, be left idling while the transmission is set to park and the parking brake is engaged.
When adding transmission fluid, be careful not to overfill it. Stop exactly at the full mark. Overfilling can lead to aeration of the transmission fluid which, in turn, affects the operation of the transmission.
Also check under your car regularly for transmission fluid leaks.
Of course, you have to also make sure that your auto service shop’s car repair mechanic is an expert not only on automotive transmission repair and maintenance but also on diagnostic services, engines, brakes and auto AC repair since you may also need such expertise for your vehicle in Tampa.
Your Automotive Transmission
Article by Josh Bennett
If you don’t know a lot about cars, you may run into some problems if you don’t learn at least a few things that can help you if it is acting funny. There are many important systems that you have to worry about, though some are pretty self sufficient. If you don’t know about your automotive transmission by now, you should learn a little about it. This is something that most people can not fix on their own, but you can keep it full with necessary fluids and you can also learn what it feels like when it needs attention by a mechanic.
Like oil in your car, you have to know how to check your transmission fluid. This is not something that you have to do a lot, but it is something that you must know something about for the sake of your car. For some cars, this does not need a lot of attention. A new automotive transmission should be fine as it is in a new car for quite a while before this becomes a problem. However, if there is a problem with your transmission, this is one of the first things that you should check and have topped off. It may run perfectly fine after that.
Sometimes, it may be more than your fluids if you are having problems with your automotive transmission. There could be more going on that needs immediate attention by a mechanic. In some cases, you may have to have a new one installed if the old one is not an easy fix. It can be hard to get to the automotive transmission in some cars, so even if you know something about them, don’t attempt to take one out and open it up unless you are positive that you can put it back where you found it. These are expensive and you don’t want to mess one up on a whim.
Before you can decide if you need automotive transmission fluid or a check up with a mechanic, you have to know what indicates a problem with your transmission. Some people that have been around cars for a while can feel it ‘slip.’ which means it is not going into gear as it should. If you have ever driven a manual automotive transmission, this is probably easier for you to pick up even if you are now driving an automatic. You can generally tell, after a while, when your car normally shifts. If your engine revs higher than normal before it shifts, something is off with your transmission.
You may notice other things as well with your automotive transmission. If you put your vehicle in reverse and the engine revs a bit and then it feels as if your car jerks into the reverse gear before it actually moves, your automotive transmission is starting to have problems. You may notice that it takes a while to go into any gear. You can ignore this for a while, but it will get worse if you don’t give it some TLC at the local garage before it totally gives out. It is one of the most expensive repairs on a car, so take care of it before it goes that far.

?Automotive Transmission Technology Development Trend
Automotive Transmission Technology Development Trend
In recent years, with innovative features of advanced transmission technology, competing contests, diversified, innovative automatic transmission technology into the development of the world auto industry a beautiful landscape.
AT Market
In the past 20 years, the global automotive automatic transmission AT technology, products, market continuously rapid development, despite its complex structure, large size, the quality too much weight, fuel consumption and higher, higher prices, maintenance costs, etc. subject to AMT , CVT, DCT and other more advanced automatic transmission a serious challenge, but its automatic shift transmission reliability and supple nature of the market are still to be widely recognized. In order to improve the inherent lack of AT, in particular to improve the fuel economy and comfort, AT gradually from 3-speed, 4-speed development to 5-speed. For each additional forward gear, it is reasonable size is bound to increase, the quality is bound to increase.
In 2001, the German company ZF introduced the first rear-wheel drive six-speed 6HP26-type AT, the first use of such bodies, 6HP26-type 6-speed AT model 5HP24 than the previous generation 5-speed AT decreased by 30% of the parts, quality and reduce by 12%, output of 600Nm torque, weighs only 85kg, size is also shorter than the previous 50mm, acceleration performance and fuel economy also have significantly improved. Since then, a subsidiary of Aisin AW Toyota, Nissan unit JATCO companies have launched a 6-speed AT. Mercedes-Benz Motor Company in 2003, is introduced seven-speed 7G-Tronic type AT. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Company unwilling to transmission technology, competition, decline, have to catch up, in 2003, an unprecedented collaboration and cooperation, joint development of 6-speed AT.
2006 Aisin AW introduced the world’s first eight-speed tiptronic smart electronic control AT ECT-i, 2007 Nian 5 Yue ZF announced that it has successfully developed a new 8-speed AT, plans to enter the market before 2008, claiming that the eight AT-speed fuel consumption and now use six-speed AT can reduce by 6% compared with the original 5-speed AT can be reduced by about 14% compared to.
1998 GM and Shanghai Automotive Group established a joint venture Shanghai General Motors Company, in Pudong production 4-speed AT; 1999 during Honda Automobile and Dongfeng Motor Corporation established a joint venture Dongfeng Honda Engine Co., Ltd. in Guangzhou, production of four-speed and 5-speed AT; 2004 Nian June ZF joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Group, established in Shanghai ZF transmission companies in the Shanghai Anting production 5HP-19-type 5-speed AT, and in 2006 started producing 6HP-type 6-speed AT; 2004 Nian 11, Japanese AISIN AW’s joint venture with China FAW Group Corporation, Tianjin, Ada automatic transmission, co-production six-speed AT; 2006 Nian 3 Yue Honda in China, Foshan, Nanhai, Guangdong Province, to establish wholly-owned Honda Auto Parts Manufacturing Co., Ltd., plans to produce 240,000 units automatic transmission, in 2006 with Ford’s Getrag close cooperative relationship with the establishment of Jiangxi Jiangling Motors Getrag transmission company, intends to produce cars with the MT and AMT.
However, to objectively pointed out, the new 6AT, 7AT, 8AT only in the high-end luxury car field emission display its advantages in the automotive market, becomes a mainstream medium and small-displacement cars, and in no use, in this area, the traditional AT rather gradually advanced CVT and DCT substitution trends.
CVT Market
Bosch Group in the Netherlands Van Doorne’s CVT transmission is a steel manufacturers and suppliers, as CVT transmission belt is one of the most important parts, so Van Doome company’s innovation in the push-type CVT belt, enjoy the patented technology to protect privileges, and a monopoly in the world. The company’s first seven-generation CVT strip has been to meet the power 200kW, torque 400Nm of power transmission.
The 20th century, the late ’80s, CVT success in Japan, and gradually, especially in JATCO company, formed a predecessor, post-drive, CVT-type spectra of different emissions, all this has energetically promoted the cause of the rapid development of CVT in Japan. At present, Japan’s Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and other auto manufacturers have the choice of models according to their own, and actively carry CVT transmission, equipped with Nissan’s JATCO company’s X-TRONIC CVT already qualified the maximum torque of 350Nm , and intends to further expand the carrying capacity.
JATCO company in 2007 in China, Guangzhou Science City, the establishment of a dedicated production of cars for the precursor of sole proprietorship with the strip-type CVT, the annual output of 14 million units, the sole proprietorship is scheduled in May 2007 was established in 2009 officially put into operation.
2007 Luk held in Shanghai Science and Technology Day, declared for the Au-di’s A8 sedan provided to carry a new continuously variable transmission torque of 450Nm has been developed and will be available the second half.
In recent years, has 80 years of experience in bearing industry, Japan’s JTEKT Corporation aware of the world’s major automobile manufacturers began to speed up the transformation from the traditional AT to the development trend of CVT to be involved in an efficient and low-noise tooth steel chain manufacturing competition. May 2007 JTEKT Corporation and the Netherlands toothed chain industry company (Dutch com-pany Gear Chain Industrial B.V., referred to as GCI) has signed a highly efficient CVT with a steel chain, an exclusive manufacturing license agreement, JTEKT company plans in 2008 on the market, and in 2012 annual sales of 100 billion yen.
According to reports, J-IC steel chain is capable of carrying large torque, with a metal strip has been twice as large than the torque capacity of today’s metal belt type CVT torque limit of approximately 400Nm, while the J-IC steel chain, the potential transfer Moment range was already twice the strip, allegedly, J-IC steel chain, the unique structure of steel chain, compared with today, you can significantly reduce the steel chain and sprocket meshing when the impact energy, reducing noise levels. Equipped with a J-IC steel CVT chain CVT can also be fuel-efficient than the existing 4% -5%, which will possibly cause the CVT more market appeal, so CVT range of applications in the vehicle to be even greater expansion. J-IC industry will wait and see the future of steel chain, the market performance.
DCT Market
European companies such as VW, ZF, GETRAG, Luk, Ricardo, Mag-neti Marrelli, GIF, etc. to cultivate mechanical automatic transmission than the North American, Japanese companies are more efforts, and has made remarkable achievements in recent years. Today in a variety of cars, the application of AMT, SMG, DCT (DSG) most, is the most successful European companies. Some European gearbox manufacturer issued a “double-clutch automatic transmission with DCT will be rapid development” of the notice.
According to a large number of experiments show that there are level with the conventional automatic transmission compared to wet DCT with AT compared to 15% increase in fuel efficiency, fuel-efficient DCT-dry wet DCT is even higher than 15%. Wet and dry clutch is the future of the most critical DCT technology, not only can effectively reduce fuel consumption, but also for the hybrid powertrain to build a good platform to further reduce fuel consumption. In addition, the hybrid application technology also helps to enter the fuel cell era, Getrag company is focus on developing hybrid variable speed drive technology and devices, recently announced a partnership with Bosch Getrag’s hybrid power systems in the DCT fields.
February 9, 2007, Getrag Corporation and Daimler – Chrysler Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding to be in North America by Getrag Corporation Daimler – Chrysler Corporation develops and manufactures DCT. Getrag company plans to expand in the global effort DCT market, is expected by 2015, Getrag’s DCT output will reach 2.4 million units or more, when the global DCT production of about 550 million units.
In June 2007 Volkswagen announced that the latest release of the DQ200-type 7-speed DCT, in order to improve efficiency and performance, using a pair of dry-type clutch to replace the original 6-speed dual-clutch wet, its compact size, the length of only 369mm, the quality of only 79kg, can be applied to a variety of models of vehicles. 7-speed DCT production is expected to be completed at the end of 2007.
United States BorgWarner (BorgWarn-er) is the world’s production and supply of DCT with a well-known technology and products company, is the main supporting DCT Volkswagen factory. China’s Shanghai Automotive Gear Factory will be the Borg Warner DualTronic products, the first five partners.
However, DCT development costs, and a huge investment in new plants, if there is not enough power, works on the DCT is not a very easy thing to do, while there are certain risks of changing market developments.
“Power to pass without interruption” and Ze-roShift AMT technology, electronically controlled automatic mechanical transmission AMT has already broken the “power transmission interrupted,” the fatal shortcomings, Ze-roShifit with single dry clutch, gear-shifting time to zero, the power to pass without interruption, this new technology in Europe, the birth of AMT, in the mechanical efficiency, fuel consumption, emissions targets, the degree of comfort, especially in the cost price declared superior to the current international market is the best-selling CVT and DCT, it is the CVT and the DCT launched a challenge. In August 2002 established ZeroShifi company in July 2003 -2005 year in January the development Zeroshift technology, in February 2005 completion of the first vehicle equipped with an automatic shift test, in September 2005 Zeroshift corporations, announced that its Zeroshift technology in the manual transmission shift based on the successful implementation of the time 0ms, smooth shifting automatic road test results and hit the industry.
This novel ZeroShift AMT advantages:
(1) shift during the time shift is zero, the power transfer without interruption;
(2) that the continued use of single dry clutch, you can significantly reduce product costs, reduce the transmission quality, and technically to ensure that the reduction of transmission of the energy loss within the organization, so that mechanical efficiency significantly improved;
(3) The transformation of the original manual transmission parts and components of the increase in most of the traditional components, manufacturing easily, Ze-roShift strength of the program is that it and the traditional manual transmission is very close to, but will be replaced by a synchronous ring gear part of the simultaneous dual-slider body.
(4) ZeroShift AMT technology, a wide range of applications, whether it is mini-cars, small displacement and large displacement of the passenger, or a variety of commercial vehicles, regardless of vehicle power, torque, size, as long as the original vehicle with manual transmission, can application and is compatible with.
Some automotive technology sector also think that, ZeroShifit market potential than any other emerging transmission transmission technology, because ZeroShift technology can be applied to all the various models, as well as can be offered to the world, already in use, the after-market catalog is still in the sales of various models. Projections, Zero rise ZeroShift emerging technologies should be fully rise to the Chinese automotive industry and the young automobile transmission industry concerns. In automatic transmission technology, the rapid development of a diversified today, China’s auto industry should strengthen cooperation with domestic and international transmission of the communication and exchange of product development for the Chinese automobile transmission direction and control, should be more wise, prudent, or more accurately, is.

Not sure what the transmission diagnostic mechanic will tell you? Are you wondering if he is telling the truth? This article is intended to briefly make the reader aware of the average transmission shop. Read More.
1. “Look at all of this metal in the pan.” What a way to sell a transmission, buyer beware! Notice when they show you the pan there is a magnet in the bottom, well this is suppose to keep the metal in the pan and out of the fluid. Some metal shavings is normal. This is why the manufacturer installed the magnet, to prevent the shavings from circulating through the transmission. Transmissions that need to be overhauled will have an outrageous amount of metal shavings and the fluid will be black.
2. “The fluid is discolored or burnt.” Now this should be easy to distinguish, look at the fluid yourself.
A. Light Pink = Fluid is Good
B. Pinkish Brown = Service Soon
C. Light Brown = Service Immediately
D. Black = Fluid is Burnt
Take some of your transmission fluid and put it on a piece of white paper or card to tell the color. The service shop will do this for you remember the three colors light pink, light brown and black.
3. “Too may miles, your transmission needs to be overhauled.” This may be the case. Only you and your transmissions know where they have been. The fluid and overall performance is a great hint. Also if you tow or drive like a race car driver you may need a rebuild, beware of who is providing the work and make sure to get a second opinion if not sure.
In conclusion this article was intended for automotive education. All of the readers involved should gain insight on certain transmission shops and the way the sell their products. Please remember these guidelines when consulting an auto repair mechanic.
